I am new to this brewing thing (about a year now) and I just did a couple of double batches for me and a friend... New equipment and not good enough volume monitoring.  I cooked a Black Ale recipe first and an Oatmeal Stout Ale second... after 1 and 1 1/2 weeks, respectively, in the primary fermenter I racked into my secondaries... as it turns out, I had about 3.5 gallons more than would fit in my four 5 gallon glass secondary fermenters.  I put all of the excess (some from each primary--black and oatmeal stout ales) into a fifth carboy.  They have all been airlocked and in the secondaries for 4 days now... all looks good.  However, I don't know if I should bottle this combination or fill a fifth ball lock keg partially full of the mixture... I would appreciate any feedback I could get and can handle criticism... I am new to this and figured it was, in essence, "free beer."  Please share your thoughts of whether I should bottle or keg this residual and if any special treatment would benefit.  Thanks, in advance, Hillbilly

Hi, I have never worried about filling a keg only partially as long as you purge most of the air out of the keg before and after filling it.Another thing I tend to do is not prime my kegs with sugar but use CO2 to carbonate.Do this after the beer has gone clear in your secondary and you will end up with little or no sediment left in the bottom of your kegs.Makes for clear brew if you should happen to travel anywhere with them.
